Early Success for Abi

2019 got of to a great start for our very own British Cycling Junior Academy star Abi Smith. Racing in the Croft Circuit series on Jan 12th Abi won the ladies race (senior). She hadn't finished there, after a quick fuel and warm-up she then went on to compete in the men's race along with Dave Moss-Blundel and Nathan Young.

Her'e Abi's view of the race.

The racing was very cold today about 1/2 degrees but there were still a fair number of riders that turned up. In the women’s race the field split pretty early with a break away of 5 of us forming a few laps in. This dropped to 4 of us soon after, and there was plenty of attacking from different parties in the latter half of the race. In the final lap I initiated a big attack but was brought back in, leaving it to a sprint. I attacked with around 400m to go and just about managed to hold off the other ladies, but it was a close-run thing! I then joined Nathan Young and Dave Moss-Blundell to give the men’s race a shot. All three of us got round just about in one piece but it was hard and fast racing - not for the faint-hearted! Many thanks to Darren Moore for excellent photographs of the race.

Good luck to Abi at the UK National Track Championships Jan 25th-27th where she will be competing against the some of the world's best female cyclists.
